Two US Aircraft (Credit:Top Indian News)
International News: On October 26, the South China Sea witnessed two shocking incidents involving the US Navy. Within just half an hour, both an MH-60R Seahawk helicopter and an F-18 Super Hornet fighter jet crashed into the sea during routine operations. Both aircraft were operating from the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Nimitz. The double accident stunned naval experts worldwide because such back-to-back crashes are extremely rare in modern naval history.
According to the US Pacific Fleet, the first incident occurred at 2:45 pm local time, when the MH-60R helicopter from Squadron HSM-73 crashed during a regular maritime mission. Search teams immediately launched a rescue operation and safely recovered all three pilots and crew members. Just 30 minutes later, at 3:15 pm, an F-18 Super Hornet from Squadron VFA-22 also went down. Luckily, both pilots of the fighter jet were rescued without serious injury, preventing a major tragedy.
Investigations have been ordered into both incidents. Officials said the aircraft were not on combat duty but routine training and operational exercises. Mechanical failure, weather issues, or technical malfunction are being considered as possible reasons. However, the fact that two aircraft from the same carrier crashed within minutes has raised questions about maintenance, safety checks, and operational risks on such missions.
The USS Nimitz is one of the most powerful nuclear-powered aircraft carriers of the US Navy. It can carry dozens of fighter jets, helicopters, and thousands of sailors. Currently, it is deployed in the Indo-Pacific Command area, often conducting joint drills with partner nations. Its presence in the South China Sea reflects Washington’s commitment to freedom of navigation in contested waters and its strategy to counter China’s growing influence.
China strongly condemned the US presence in the South China Sea after the crashes. Its foreign ministry said the American ships and aircraft come to the region only to show off their strength, threatening peace and stability. China insists the sea is under its control and regularly protests against US and allied naval exercises. The crashes gave Beijing fresh ground to claim that American operations bring instability rather than security.
This maritime region is one of the world’s most contested waters. China claims almost all of it, while countries like Vietnam, the Philippines, and Indonesia oppose Beijing’s expansion. The US and Western allies regularly conduct “freedom of navigation” exercises, challenging China’s dominance. Every military movement in this area sparks tension, and accidents like these highlight the risks of constant naval activity in disputed waters.
The US Navy has assured that thorough investigations will be conducted into the twin crashes. While no lives were lost, the incidents have exposed vulnerabilities in high-pressure naval operations. For China, this is another chance to attack US policies. For the US, it is a reminder of the dangers in one of the world’s most volatile maritime zones. The coming days will show whether these crashes remain accidents or turn into another flashpoint in the US-China rivalry.
